File Sharing

How many people that go to cortland share files over the internet? Cortland acknowledges that the following websites such as: Kazaa, Napster, Cheetah and Grokster may be utilized for a small fee, however sit on the fence of dangerous legal consequences. One person may pay for a movie or song, which is allowable, however when the person who paid for this shares the file with friends it infringes on the copyright of the original creators. Copyright infringement is a serious issue and can lead to legal problems down the road.

I believe Cortland should, and is, doing the right thing when it comes to protecting campus from a potential lawsuit. I went to Cortlands peer to peer file sharing page where the schools administration talks about cracking down on file sharing. Cortland is following the Digital Millenium Copyright act which protects the copyright legalities that companies have from people sharing their files illegally. Futhermore, as said in the P2P file sharing document, Cortland has installed programs that will cause the illegal file sharing websites to not work properly. I believe this is a good step toward protecting Cortlands campus, as well as their database. I know from person experience that using these services (I used Limewire) can lead to your computer getting viruses. Cortland offers a free service to all students called Ruckus, which students can use to download music, virus free. It seems like Cortland is cracking down on an issue that most people think is harmless and simply getting “free” music and movies...But in the end, who cares....everybodys doing it right?

I guess I kinda agree with the what Cortland does with these services, b/c you can get viruses. But I think that if students want to use these programs that they should be able to. It really isn't that big of a deal to me, but people are always gonna find ways to cheat the system, so why not just let them do what they want.
